A couple in Co Clare has returned to the country for a holiday and said it was “great”.RTE 1 has reported that Catherine (not her real name) and her husband Tom have been living in Co Meath, and they travelled from the capital Cork to Shannon to visit their daughter, Emma, in Co Mayo.
Tom said he and Catherine had been staying in Shannon “for a couple of weeks”, but when they returned to Co Mayo for a visit to the beach, they noticed that the town was “still quite small”.
“There were a lot of small shops and pubs and restaurants, but I think the main thing we enjoyed was seeing the sea, the beautiful beach and the view of the Shannon coast,” Tom said.
“The view of Shannon was amazing, the waves were huge, it was quite lovely, we went up there and saw it for ourselves, it is a beautiful place, and I think that was one of the reasons we decided to go back.”
Tom and Catherine said they were “just looking forward to it”, but also said they felt “very relaxed” having visited Ireland’s capital.
The couple, who have been travelling on a trip of about three weeks, have not spoken to the media since they arrived back home, but Tom said they had been very impressed with how Ireland is treated by tourists.
“We just came back from Ireland, we just came to Ireland, and the people are great, they treat us very well, they are nice people,” he said.RTE has contacted Co Mayo Tourism and the Department of Foreign Affairs for further comment.
