Here are a few last minute Tet tips as we near the Lunar New Year.
TET TIP #1: Be sure to withdraw cash from the ATMs earlier in the week. By Sunday some ATMs will have a line up of patrons, as well as have been known to run out of cash.
TET TIP #2: Learn how to say Happy New Year in Vietnamese! “Chuc Mung Nam Moi!” Saying this to your new Vietnamese friends throughout the next week will generate lots of great smiles!
TET TIP #3: If you are invited to someone’s house for Tet, say yes! A few things to prepare: A gift for the family (A bottle of wine or a Tet basket – being sold everywhere), some lucky money in red envelopes for the kids (crisp 5000 dong bills are perfect), and an attitude that is open-minded and ready to have some family fun!
TET TIP #4: From now until new year’s day, you should leave at least a half hour early because the roads are extremely busy. Drive safe! And please, don’t drink and drive!
TET TIP #5: Traditionally it is best to get your haircut before the new year. So, get yourself book in to a hair salon soon – you only have a few days left!
TET TIP #6: Lucky money gifts are some of the best gifts you give to EVERYONE, including your friends, your family, your xe om driver, or the lady who serves you your favourite pho. Buy some red envelopes (being sold everywhere right now) and put in one new, crisp 5000 dong note.
TET TIP #7: On new year’s day, it is strongly advised to go and take some pictures of the empty streets in Hanoi. Everyone will be with their families, so that means the streets will be very empty. If you are planning on buying anything (souvenirs, etc.) on that day, you might want to reconsider.
TET TIP #8: Sunday night will be one of the best parties of the year in Hanoi and Saigon, complete with fireworks. It would be best to leave you motorcycle at home or hotel because the streets are going to be jam-packed.
TET TIP #9: Have Fun!
Chuc mung nam moi, from all of us at Footprint Vietnam Travel!
